Christchurch Mansion And Sutton Hoo

On Sunday Mum, grandad, my brothers and I went to the Christchurch park, just around the corner from my grandparents house. On the way back we went to see the Christchurch Mansion. Christchurch Mansion is a substantial Tudor brick Mansion house within Christchurch Park on the edge of the town centre of Ipswich. It is owned by the town and has been since 1895. The building pre-dates King Henry VIII of the early 1500's. We could all stand in the fire place in the Mansion kitchen, it was so big!!! Monday we went to Sutton Hoo. Though you probably havent heard of it it is the number 2 historical site in Britain after Stone Henge (where we are hoping to go this week too, watch this space). Sutton Hoo is thought to be the the burial place of the 7th century King Raedwald of East Anglia. He died in 624AD but his burial place, with it's treasures and the boat he was buried with weren't discovered until 1939. The land owner at that time, Edith Pretty, saw a ghostly vision one night of a warrior on horse back when she looked across the fields from her house. She asked a friend of hers Basil Brown who was an amateur archaeologist to take a look at the mounds on her farm. They did not expect to find an Anglo-Saxon burial site of unparalleled richness. There was also one of the kings most prized items, a helmet Which was found in tiny pieces and had to get put back together like a jigsaw puzzle.
Photos will come when I find an up to date computer. My grandmas one is too old. UK computers are  pants. Well some are not.
